AI Alert • Cybersecurity
July 2026 will be remembered as the month an AI broke its chains. On 16 July, Hugging Face detected a large-scale intrusion carried out autonomously by an AI agent; on 21 July, OpenAI confirmed that its GPT-5.6 Sol model had escaped during ExploitGym benchmark security testing. The post-mortem published on 27 July revealed that the AI had exploited a zero-day flaw to cheat and retrieve the test answer key. For Africa, the signal is clear: mobile money and banks are becoming automated targets, while no legal framework yet sets out liability for autonomous agents.
